CAREER EXPLORATIOn:
VR (virtual reality)

Virtual reality is a realistic and immersive computer simulation of a three-dimensional environment, created using interactive software and hardware, and experienced or controlled by movement of the body. Abbreviation: VR

VR has advanced tremendously for the purposes of career exploration.
It was first considered cutting edge technology back in the 1970s when it was used as a driving education simulator. Today it has many different applications in career exploration.

Beginning in 2021, PAMC welcomed the chance to provide our clients with VR technology.

PAMC now offers VR career exploration for all clients of the organization.

PAMC's VR system is CareerLabsVR.
CareerLabsVR offers 15 highly realistic trades career positions to explore through VR.

The 15 career exploration experiences listed below are available to clients of PAMC:

1. Stick Welding: Learn about basic components of stick welding to complete several welds around a
construction site. Career explorers will experience working at heights on scaffolds and will be challenged
to work at difficult angles commonly experienced by welders.

2. Residential Electrician: Install new appliances in the basement of an old building that is being turned
into a Bed and Breakfast. Career explorers will be tasked with finding and repairing broken wires,
assessing the voltage, troubleshooting outlet repair, and using the tools that are unique to this trade.

3. HVAC Technician: Work from a metropolitan rooftop to assess the performance of heating and
cooling units. Career explorers will learn how to troubleshoot broken units, repair, and replace fans,
wires, refrigerant levels, and complete other tasks an HVAC technician might face in a day on the job.

4. Heavy Equipment Operator: Drive and operate a large excavator to remove rubble from a trench.
Career explorers will learn to work multiple levers inside the cabin of a large excavator while collecting
rocks using the bucket, and unloading them into a dump-truck.

5. Robotics Technician: Perform maintenance and run diagnostics on broken robots to repair them.
Career explorers will be tasked with submitting performance logs and adjusting line speeds while
working to ensure everything is running effectively.

6. Robotic Welding Operator: Work in a facility that manufactures parts for wind turbines. Career
explorers will set-up and program robotic welding arms, and must ensure that the welding production
process goes to plan.

7. Mining Engineer: Experience the planning phases of building a mine while learning about various
mine types. Career explorers will complete tasks that are common in this line of work, such as piloting a
drone and loading blast caps.

8. Process Engineer: Work in a control room to monitor and adjust the variables of four different
machines to keep the production quality of iron ore pellets up. These machines include hammer
crushers, magnetic separators, froth flotation cells, and disk pelletizers.

9. Pipe Fitter: Work to measure and cut large water pipes and to help with the installation process. This
simulation takes place at an outdoor construction site for a new hydroelectric dam. The explorer will
read and interpret blueprints to cut and fit pipes to the correct length.

10. Mining Machine Operator: Drive a cable shovel excavator. The career explorer will use the cable
shovel, navigating to various sites of the mine, to fill haul trucks with material containing hematite rock
from inside the mine.

11. Construction Welder: Experience three popular types of welding while working on the construction
site of a building. The explorer will learn about MIG, TIG, and Stick welding as they work their way up the
construction site, performing a range of welding tasks.

12. CNC Operator: Work on a large CNC vertical milling machine. The career explorer will learn to read
design drafts and program the functionality of the machine to fill an order.

13. Manual Machinist: Experience the process of working on a large manual lathe and manual milling
machine. The explorer will be tasked with reading and interpreting design drafts, cleaning the
workspace, and setting up and operating various machines.

14. Sheet Metal Worker: Assemble and install metal ducts in a small home workshop. The career
explorer will manipulate sheet metal using guillotines and bending breaks to cut and bend sheet metal
into the required sizes before performing installs on the jobsite.

15. Steel Production Worker: Work on a large oxygen furnace which is used to produce molten steel
from iron. The explorer will begin the experience in a control room overlooking the large production
floor where they will prepare for the next stages of steel production.
